WHEW!!!! 2009 is finally over!! Out with the single digits and in with double!!!

WHEW!!! 2009 is over with a big sigh as the Mottern family feels it was a constant run to the finish!
Emily probably had the shortest race since she is still young yet and life tends to be simple yet. In August she started 7th grade and is still one of smallest students in the grade. The greatest change has been that she is starting to become a little more outgoing and the sunshine of her personality outside the house has been a welcomed surprise to everyone. Her social life has began to pick up and Nick and I are relieved to see that she is not rushing to match the excessive social networking of society's normal 12 year olds, but Emily has found texting her friends and Farmville on Facebook to have its benefits in conversation among her friends. Not to mention, texting helps get a message quick and easy to all her softball teammates in a matter of seconds! Softball. Softball is still Emily’s love. She started in January 2009, practicing for ASA (Amateur Softball Association League) which led into Little League practice and games in April. In June Emily was chosen for Little League's All Star 11 year old team which made it to the State Play offs. They came in second place, failing to make first by the last play of the last inning. It was an exciting game played by a group of very talented, dedicated and very sweet group of girls. I am sure it helps being the parent and friend to the families of these girls, but it was just as exciting watching these girls as it would be watching the famous Yankees in person at Yankees stadium! (The Mottern’s favorite MLB team).
I suppose I should mention that academically Emily is doing very well! She started 7th grade with Algebra I and Spanish I, which means she is already ahead for her high school years. She is a distinguished honor roll student and plays percussion in Band. I am not sure if anyone ever knew this, but I myself just learned that Music Therapy is a form of therapy offered to children to help rather introverted children express themselves and be more comfortable in their surroundings. Without understanding why it was so important for Emily to be involved in Band, we lovingly pushed Emily to join Band letting her choose percussion. It has been one of the greatest things for her. She excels! I honestly believe that this was her means of expressing herself and why we are seeing her blossom socially. But, without giving you all the details, she is one of the best percussionists in the band, completely dedicated and naturally talented in picking up the rhythms and memorizing the music. We are looking forward to her marching in the high school band in a few years when it will become more challenging but for now we enjoy watching her learn to play her drum set. She hopes to be able to join the Jazz band next year.
As for hobbies, Emily is our little “Engineer” in the making! She is a Lego-maniac, building with Lego’s often, and recently added the Lego robot to her collection which will allow her to attend Robotics workshops this summer to expand her knowledge of computer programming and design to her Lego building. It sounds a lot more impressive that it really is, but none the less a ton of fun for her. She also loves to play video games with her friends, which is a newly added hobby, and in December she joined the Ski Club at school and thank fully for the recent snow, she has been outside practicing skiing. She is an active kid, with lots of interests and we are very proud of her! She still is a little peanut so we are excited to see if she follows in Nicks footsteps and has a growth spurt this summer, 2010…we’ll let you know!!!

Now…Kourtney Lynn!!! Our Social Butterfly! She is now 17 years old. We are not sure how it happened. It seems like yesterday I said she was 7. She has her drivers license, she is a Junior in high school and there are days when it is hard for Nick and I to breathe when the reality sinks in that she won’t be home much longer. There is a story I tell Kourtney about how when Nick and I were trying to decide whether it was time to have a second child, I kept struggling with how another child would ever compare to Kourtney. That she was on a pedestal for all the world to admire. There are days when I feel like that again. Like I need to place her up there again because we need to embrace the little bit of time we have until she leaves again..and then the most amazing thing happens…… REALITY! She is a teenager after all, HA!! Luckily we have raised a very level headed self confident daughter who realizes all the great things in life and having a boyfriend in high school is not one of the things she finds value in, so no boy friend drama for us. She has a wonderful group of solidly well adjusted friends who she hangs out with where all the parents know each other and are friends and therefore trust runs high. Kourtney does very well in school, choosing to take honors level classes and is constantly exploring new areas of interest. She started her Junior year of high school as the FFA (Future Farmers of America) Secretary and proudly organized in 4 days the FFA Halloween float demonstrating many of the successful careers that the FFA supports. Her interest in the FFA has strengthened her interest in Ecology and plant sciences. She participates several times a year in public speaking events, and demonstrates several plant science experiments such as “plant tissue culture” at local fairs. And thanks to the FFA, and her advisor, Mrs. Smith-Wells, Kourtney also got her first job this year.
This summer Kourtney starting working for a retired college professor, Dr Blair Carbaugh helping to care for several acres of newly developed blight resistant American Chestnut trees. Several decades ago, American Chestnut Trees began to become extinct due to a sudden blight. However, genetic engineering has brought them back and Kourtney actively helps Dr Carbaugh in the care and management of over 4,000 trees at his farm in Riverside, PA. This opportunity has led her to meet several interesting people, such as Sara Fitzgerald, professor at Penn State Univeristy who she will travel with this summer to work with at other locations planting more chestnut trees, doing research on the trees and learning various other key elements to the American Chestnut survival. Kourtney is still struggling with what she wants to go to college for and what she wants to do when “she grows up” but she consistently leans towards the sciences of Ecology and we are pretty sure you will find her as some sort of Ecologist someday.
Kourtney also is involved in Softball, active in summer ASA and this past spring 2009 played left field and third base JV for High School Softball where her dad coached. She has a heck of a bat on her and Nick is consistently watching her improve her stats, hoping that once she gets to college she will find her groove and find a real passion for the game. However, in 2010 she will leave the high school softball field and try Track and Field instead, wanting to revisit her days of junior high and give a go at discus and shot put again, where she was quite good once. Although Nick will still be coaching JV Softball, I will be proudly watching Kourtney at her track meets! Kourtney’s other “sport” is Bowling, where she is now a Varsity member of the bowling team.
As for Kourtney’s hobbies…this is where she is the Social Butterfly. She is our social networking queen. She has friends all across the globe and talks regularly to friends in California and Canada, Alaska and Quebec. She loves meeting new people and navigates the net very safely. She should probably give lessons to her friends on how to have modern day “Pen Pals”. She gets to learn about Yosemite National Park and all it has to offer from her friend Joe, a senior in high school in CA who tells her about his experiences out there and his fire fighting school training. He grew up near the national park and shares all it has to offer, which helps her to realize the benefits of Natural Resource and Parks Management as a career option someday. (again Ecology) Likewise, she tells us about her friend in Quebec and how she rang in the NEW YEAR, their traditions and their perspectives of the economy in 2010 and their view of America. (Kourtney is also very interested in economics and politics) And so it goes, each week Kourtney has something new to tell us about the people she meets and the new and exciting things she learns, places she discovers and ideas she explores because she can meet people like this. Although, as a parent, I could get nervous about this “new” means of socializing, I realize that this is going to be her means of staying in touch with all her friends when she is far from home. She will be able to keep everyone she loves close to her by sharing what is going on with her just by logging on. Likewise, I feel that wherever she goes she will have the opportunity to know a place or a face before she even gets there and she is developing a real talent for “reading “ people before she heads out into the world.
Every night we have dinner together as a family. It wasn’t something we ever consciously said we needed to do, it was just something that sort of was a given in our household, perhaps something Nick and I always had growing up and felt it was just what a family was supposed to do every night..have dinner together. Anyhow, another nightly routine developed from our nightly dinners together....”Story time”. Each night at dinner we sit and take turns telling our “Stories” from the day. It has become so ingrained in our routine that the girls sometimes have trouble waiting to tell their stories. “oh, oh, I have a story to tell then”….. And even funnier yet, when Kourtney goes away to FFA conferences, we really miss her stories, which always prompts us to call her, or for her to call us for the days “Stories”. It took several years of this before Emily caught on, several years of us asking Emily “don’t you have any stories to tell us?”…the funny thing is that now Emily will watch more carefully through the day for things to tell us at night. Funny conversations with teachers or friends, or funny situations that happened, successes in handling something that could have gone wrong, or maybe an injustice that she needs to vent about…either way, it is nice to finally see her join in with stories too.
Now for Nick and I…. Nick and I sit in amazement every day, watching our two girls. They truly are the light of our lives. But life needs to march on for him and I too…and so for me….nothing is really new…Still working full time, still in school part time working on completing a bachelors degree, and still trying to hold my head above water with overseeing the ASA program for Danville while I find time to enjoy my family and friends. My new year resolution for 2010 is to make life about experiences and less about the things I ultimately have no control over. My favorite saying is by Walt Disney “Keep moving forward” and so I shall…..
If you asked us what the best part of 2009 was, I think we all would have to say that the highlight came when Nick got a new job. After 16 years at Bloomsburg Carpet Industries. In September they announced they were reducing their work hours due to the economy, which if you read my August blog, came on the heels of them saying work was steady and they were going strong, but the reality was that they had not given any pay raises in three years and now they economy was forcing them to reduce the labor force to a four day work week and a 1 day a week lay off for 4 month minimum but potentially 6 months. So Nick set out to find something new and on December 2nd he accepted a position as the Maintenance Mechanic of the Danville Waste Water Treatment Plant. He was chosen out of 70 applicants. We were very fortunate that he was well qualified and the stars were aligned! Not only did this come with a nice pay increase and a set schedule of routine pay increases, better benefits, a closer commute, State pension plan and job security, BUT it also came with the promise of a job that has a brighter future, more challenge within the job for Nick, job advancement, an awesome boss and the added bonus of EXTREME happiness for Nick…who would have thought that working around a SEWER all day could bring such happiness. Hahahhahaha Seriously, he is in his glory and everyone who knows him sees it. I am so proud of him! This past year has brought great and necessary changes for him. His confidence as a softball coach has grown by leaps and bounds and the respect he has received in the community is amazing. Players, parents and members of the community have noticed his strong ability to be a positive role model, positive leader and positive influence in the community. His character in the community is known to be one that everyone respects and that helped him obtain a job that years ago he would not have had the confidence to apply for. Now he hold his head high and his shoulders straight, and feels confident about who he is. It is nice to finally sit at the dinner table and when the girls are done with their stories, Nick has stories to tell about his day!
I am sure there is a lot more I could tell you but don’t want to bore you with the details. I am adding random pictures that may give you a window into the life of the Mottern’s and maybe help you see how busy we are. Please know that you are always in our thoughts and in our hearts and although you may not hear from us often, you certainly are welcome to drop us a line or a visit. Our life is like a constant random series of events. One thing leads to another and then to another, like a domino effect. We wouldn’t be upset if someone came along and said “Hey, I need to stop the dominos here” and made us take some time for something else because it worked out that the timing met at that moment. We welcome life’s opportunities to stop and smell the flowers.
Know that we love you and miss you all very much!!
Best wishes to you and your families in 2010 and may we see you before 2011!!! Oxoxoxoxoxo

HELLLLOOOOO EVERYONE!! If anyone has been checking for updates and has been disappointed that I haven't kept you up to date...I am so sorry!!

Here I am....August 31st. The girls are a week into a new school year, Kourtney a Junior in high school and Emily a 7th grader. It has been a VERY busy and semi-complicated summer to say the least.

The big relief is that Nick and I have job security in unsure economic times. You may have heard the President mention Geisinger Health System in the news as an industry model, so you can guess my job security has been renewed. As for Nick the industrial grade carpet manufacturing business is as stable as ever, thank goodness for business men who still beleive in American made.

The greatest accomplishment of the year so far has been my successful completion of an Associates degree in Business Administration from Penn State University. I am now a proud Alumni member! As I sit here, I now look toward the next goal I has set for myself to complete my bachelors of Art Studio that I started 20 years ago. I have 6 classes until it is complete, and the first one is scheduled just two days from now. Once I've finished those classes, I then will look forward to entering the Master's program at Bloomsburg University for Instructional Technology. This field is growing and seems to incorporate all the things I am most passionate about work, process improvement, instruction, design and information technology. I may not finish until I am 45 but it should be worth it in the end.

That's the short of it, now for the rest of the story....

The entire has revolved around softball. in March I was nominated and elected to be president of our local ASA (the Danville Bandits Softball Association) softball organization. This organization started two years ago with two teams and now is looking at 5 teams of 13 girls each. We are non-profit and consist of approximately 120 members and a board of about 12. It has been a time consuming feat to develop the bylaws, code of conduct, attend numerous tournaments (two days of non-stop softball games on the weekend) for both girls and manage to please a whole lot of people most of the time.

I don't feel like we had much of a summer since Emily made it to All Stars for Little League, and if anyone has the TV on today, they can see the Little League World Series happening in our backyard of Williamsport, PA. We made a trip earlier this week to watch some games, collect pins and enjoy the experience of something so big in our rural state. Anyway, Emily had two weekends of of tournament playoffs and her team won the district and sectional playoffs but lost at the western state championship playoffs. I won't go into details about it, but I can tell you that the team we won against in the western playoffs is the team that won at the State level. Although we did not get to the State level, it was just as well because the girls were getting a little tired of softball at that point anyway, although all the softball was making them pretty darn good players. Just two weeks ago, we hosted our own tournament in Danville and raised a pretty penny for our organization and once again our girls performed flawlessly. Emily even won the pickle award for getting into a pickle twice while attempting to make it home to score.

Kourtney has had a successful softball season as well, although her success doesn't come from the remarkable plays she makes as much as the fact that she has made it one year from surgery on her knee and can safely say that her knee is as good as it was before surgery with a minor ache now and again. Kourtney's bigger new is also that she became a legal and licenced driver on August 3rd. We are very proud of her accomplishment and are thrilled that she is getting to experience a new found independence. Emily is enjoying a sister that can run her places too. I am proud of the fact that I managed to get over my excessive anxiety about letting my little girl go.

The Season Begins!

Well here we are, facing another softball season...this year is sooo much better than last year!!
After a long year and much anticipation, Kourtney is back on the field...running, catching, batting and giving her mother much pride and joy. Even better...she's not on the field by herself either. Nick was asked to be the new Junior Varsity High School Softball coach!! I cannot tell anyone enough what a relief it is that if she gets hurt again, at least he can be there right by her side! Things are as they should be, thank God. So if you ask what Nick is up to these days, he literally is eating, sleeping, dreaming, playing, and breathing SOFTBALL!! 5 nights a week he coaches Kourtney's team or is at a JV game, then 2 or 3 nights a week he is coaching Emily's team. On weekends he attends several meetings having to do with one of the three leagues he is involved in. He's really busy!!

2009

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were ringing in the year 2000 with worries of the new millennium followed by the tragedy of 2001 and the fear we were recovering from as we rang in 2002. So here we are, preparing for 2009 and the inauguration of the United States first African American President and increasing fear over the state of our economy. It seems as the decade is almost to an end, the decade ’00 will be regarded as one of constant struggle. Personally I am looking forward to the next decade ’10 where I will be watching Kourtney graduate high school (Class of ’11) and begin the next phase of her life, College. I anticipate that I will have renewed sense of hope as she earns her degree and has the opportunity to make a difference in this world. Emily will be graduating in ’15 and for her I anticipate a world much different than the one we are in now. As for myself, I anticipate finishing this decade with my Associates degree in Business Administration (May ’09) and expect that by 2012 I will complete my Bachelors in Management. Nick is also planning on going back to school, so perhaps the decade ’10 will be one of continuing education for the Motterns.

Our Daughters

Both the girls are quite accomplished in school by staying on the honor roll and participating in various school activities. Kourtney is now in 10th grade. She attempted to run for class president this year, however lost by 3 votes to the president of last year’s class. She recovered fast from that disappointment and focused on her memberships to FFA (Future Farmers of America) Key Club (Volunteer Club) and Forensics (Speech/Public Speaking Club) and Planet (Save the Earth Club). She also has been busy going to physical therapy for her knee that she had surgery on this past year. That has been pretty intense for her, but she is doing well and has received clearance to begin the schools bowling league. Her physical therapy should wrap up some time in January and just in time for her to begin Softball training season. Nick and I cannot wait to see her on the field again this spring, and will not sit through a game without slightly holding our breath that we never have to go through another recovery from an injury of one our girls. Speaking of holding our breaths, Kourtney acquired her permit for driving. It is a good thing that Kourtney was blessed with such a calm, cool and collected father who has been very good at teaching her the rules of the road. Granted, Kourtney was driving stick shift at the age of 11, motoring around a Chevy Sprint on the Mottern’s property for quite a few years. From go-karts and four wheelers and “field beater” cars, she has gained a lot of experience in driving off road. Unfortunately, drivers education in school doesn’t teach them what the actual experience of driving on a paved surface is going to be like with other vehicles heading toward you. So Nick has taken on the job of “driving coach” and I have resolved myself as passenger since I am very clear on my tendency to overreact and do not want to shake Kourtney’s confidence as a driver. If you have any good tips for Kourtney, feel free to post a comment for her.

Emily is now in 6th grade. This was the year she went from Mahoning Cooper Elementary where several generations before her attended elementary school, to the Danville Area Middle School. I held my breath as she started this new school which combines 3 other elementary schools into one. Many children have a hard time making the transition, but Emily was ready. I am confident that her participation in Little League Softball made the transition much easier for her since it enabled her to get to know a lot of girls from the other elementary schools before she got to the Middle school. This was ideal for Kourtney as well, both for Middle school and High school. Emily is also focused on her religious education and is looking forward to receiving Confirmation in 2011.

The Year in Review

So, I managed to blog up until August, when Kourtney started her physical therapy and I began my Fall semester of college. This past fall was the most challenging semester yet, as I tackled Algebra again. Thank God for my dad, Bruce who tutored me through the class and helped me get a B in the class. I also thank God that my girls have MUCH better math skills than I do. I will begin 2009 tackling Statistics, big fun! Nick begins 2009 training for his certification in welding, which will make him more marketable should the economy turn around and offer more jobs. For now he starts his 16th year at Bloomsburg Carpet Industries. He has job security and the BCI has reassured it’s employees that they have not felt the effects of the slow economy as of yet…good news.

There has only been room left for the two other facets of our life, family and friends.
Mom (Becky), Dad (Bruce) and Dawn (sister) and Dave (brother-in-law) are all doing well. Dawn will begin 2009 starting school again, full time, to launch a new career in Ultrasound technology or something like that. Mom and Dad are making plans for a trip to Rome in celebration of Dad becoming Catholic. After 39 years of marriage, he finally has received the “calling” to join the Catholic church, thanks to a wonderful priest named Father Don. Mom is excited to finally have company to attend church weekly.

As for our friends, our circle of grows surrounding softball. This year, Nick decided to coach ASA softball and we became great friends with the Fritzs’. We now spend our available free time hanging out with the Drumheller and Fritz families. We all have daughters in and around the same ages which makes our get togethers a lot of fun. Nick was thrilled when Tony Fritz asked him to go on a Bear hunt this past November. Although they did not get a bear, Nick has several hours worth of stories to tell about the experience. It seems he and Tony have a tendency to create these great experiences to share with everyone, including the stories of taking their daughters out hunting as well. Yes, Emily has now found a “soul sister” in Tony’s younger daughter, Leslie. They are two peas in a pod when it comes to their shared interests.

For now, to end this, I will leave you with a quote from Ann Landers:
“ Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not to make a promise you don't think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look ten years younger. Don't be afraid to say, 'I love you'. Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world. “

To all of you who took the time to read this..know “We love you.” “ We love you.”

Mottern's Olympic Summer Luge

September begins with the girls back in school, Kourtney beginning her Sophmore year and Emily as a 6th grader in middle school. Labor day weekend lent itself to Nick and his softball buddies throwing a "family" bash. A little bashed it ended up being after the guys put together a 120 foot slip and slide for the kids (and adults) that provided hours of entertainment and was the beginning of an annual "olympic style" competition for furtherest distance slid. A summer luge if you will.

Every now and again adults have to see if they can compete with kids a third of their age. Nick was up for the challenge and did quite well, willing GOLD this year, beating out the gracefulness of Tara Fritz and Marlee Drumheller. Better luck next year girls! This accomplishment did not come without a price to pay for Nick, as he has been taking Tylenol and Advil on a schedule since Monday morning. He will tell you it was well worth it. The girls did not come away unscathed either, as each one of them proudly displayed bruises on their hip bones from landing belly first onto the slide.

Perhaps we will submit our video to YouTube!

The Edge of Exhaustion

School is in it's final week, just a few more days and I will have another semester behind me.
This semester has been the worst, I did not realize how horrible it was going to be trying to enjoy summer, work and go to school. Luckily, I have a two week break before I start Fall semester (this will be the 4 semester of 5 that I need to get my Associates degree inBusiness Administration). By fall of 2009, I am hoping to start working on my Bachelors of Management Information Systems again and if all goes well, Kourtney will be graduating high school at the same time I am graduating from BU. Woo hoo!

The girls are gearing up for school to start on August 25th and Kourtney is happy to finally be putting weight on her knee (albeit, very little right now). We expect that she will be able to dump the crutches and start physical therapy by her second week of school. She will have just enough time left in September to do the things she has been dying to do since school let out...Knoebel's here we come!!

Here are some photos of how the girls are keeping themselves busy this summer...enjoy!

Softball, Softball and ...More Softball!

Little League softball came to an end on July 18th, when Emily's team (coached by Nick) ended up losing to our biggest rival, Milton. It was a bitter sweet loss since we were hoping that we wouldn't have to travel to Minersville for sectional playoffs, which we didn't since we lost. The girls took it in stride though, and enjoyed a ride in the fire trucks to celebrate a good game and good sportsmanship. Milton needed to win, life is pretty miserable for them when they lose.

Tomorrow Nick turns his focus on ASA softball, where the Lace Bandits will play 3 games on Saturday and one on Sunday, and more if they win them all. This is one of the last few tournaments we will play in, so thankfully softball is almost over completely. This is just in time for Kourtney to start physical therapy! The running never ends....
